In recent years, large cap US stocks and private equity have dramatically outperformed most asset classes. Almost every other asset class in a diversified portfolio has served as a drag on portfolio returns. This is testing many investors’ patience with diversification. This research note is intended to remind investors of the benefits of taking a patient approach to investing.
In this episode of Excess Returns, we sit down with Jason Buck of Mutiny Funds to examine the idea of stocks for the long run and some potential challenges to it: - Why the impressive historical returns of the US stock market may be an outlier - The importance of looking at real returns vs nominal returns - How to build a diversified portfolio to handle different economic scenarios - The concept of "fractal diversification" in portfolio construction - Rethinking sustainable withdrawal rates in retirement - The pros and cons of using leverage in a diversified portfolio

(Early) Retirement
Today’s post deals with an intriguing question: how does early retirement impact my life expectancy? You see, since retiring six years ago, I’ve always assumed I’m doing my body a favor. I live a more relaxed life, exercise regularly, and sleep more every night. So, I’ve always believed my 2018 early retirement decision should improve my health and increase my life expectancy, right? Monetary policy, geopolitical events, and economic conditions—among other factors—significantly influence currency performance in the foreign exchange market. To answer this question, we partnered with OANDA to visualize a decade of highs and lows of the top eight most-traded currencies, by volume, according to the Bank for International Settlements. The U.S. dollar (USD) was the best-performing currency of the last decade, taking top spot in six of the last 10 years. Relatively stable economic activity and the role of the USD as the world’s reserve currency contributed to its general strength. Importantly, the USD also represents a safe-haven investment in times of crisis, meaning investors will often put money in the currency during periods of instability, such as during the 2014–2016 oil price shock. Post-COVID-19, the USD peaked in 2022 in response to aggressive interest rate hikes, though it came off its highs in 2023.
